  • Some stats…

Some stats for you from our little adventure in Switzerland…

Enough evening meals to feed one person for 10 years.

Over a tonne of fruit and vegetables (1111kg in fact).350kg of potatoes, 100kg each of yogurt and cheese, 120kg of pasta, 90kg of rice, 322kg of meat and 700 schnitzels; not to mention 287kg of breakfast cereal.

The high walks team have helped you to walk over 8000km (5000 miles) and ascend a total of nearly 450km (280 miles). To put that another way, that’s like walking from here to Surrey about 10 times whilst climbing Mount Everest nearly 20 times!

The activities team have arranged and provided tickets for a total of 1362 toboggan runs, that’s a distance of 953 km (nearly 600 miles).

Is it any wonder you’re feeling tired?

  • The last of the coaches has now left KISC en-route to Surrey. ETA currently on-time Sunday 27 August at 0730 BST, Safe journey to all!

  • Hi everyone, everyone is having a great time here in Switzerland doing high ropes, hiking, rafting etc. However, scouting is not just about the high adrenalin activities. Whether it’s spiritual reflection or any other aspect that floats your boat, it is important to take some time to reflect upon things, recharge, solve problems you’ve been thinking about or even to be creative.

Michael Doyle, one of our scouts from 8th Woking has been doing just that and has created a poem that he wanted to share. When I first heard it, I was blown away at the combination of subject matter, abstract thinking, tempo and vocabulary. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Well done Michael and keep reflecting!

    Kings and Birds

Birds and Kings aren’t usually compared in any way but they aren’t so different in the emotions they convey.

We rarely stop to think about their kingdom in the skies. We can’t venture there, cause without wings, we fall to our demise.

Kings worry about affairs of state and keeping people happy, but up there with the birds the story isn’t quite so sappy.

Birds fight to keep their young alive the smaller ones at least, and they live off the smaller things while bigger birds, they feast.

The bigger birds while selfish they rule the skies by day, and we as humans see them as graceful in every single way.

The rule of the sky is so simple, it’s almost poetic.

But many birds have trouble trying to be empathetic.

And the smaller birds, they do get by, but are really shy and meek. And though many don’t like it, the strong will eat the weak.

Kings fight wars with other kings, and keep the poor in line, and all the while him and his friends live a life so fine.

It’s similar with the bigger birds, always ever fighting, but scaring all the smaller birds to keep revolution from alighting.

I think I’ve said enough about this hierarchy in the skies,

It’s quite amusing actually, to think on how time flies. But i think that I’ve established, among many other things, the worries of small starlings equal the sorrows of great kings.
